Apart from the organisational value for your fluent decoders in Yrs 3-8, follow-up activities also provide an opportunity to develop 'after reading' comprehension strategies - that is, the opportunity to revisit text and do something with the content that has been read.

All the research on brain activity points to the fact that to own or retain content you have to do something with it. If you don't use it you lose it - in brain activity speak, the doing transfers the information from the very limited short term memory, into the long term memory.

The activities we have developed using Bloom's Taxonomy provide for a range of interesting, progressively more challenging activities that the kids love. Remember, answering questions checks comprehension... that's all! Activities that require applying, analysing (click on the links for examples), creating, synthesising and evaluating information are much more empowering and motivating.
